It's a true national asset and is the main home of HSE's Science Division - 380 scientists, engineers, occupational health and hygiene specialists and support professionals working together to provide the research and evidence that HSE requires to underpin its regulatory activities, protect people and places and make Great Britain one of the safest places in the world to work and do business.

Overview
Asbestos is a general name given to several naturally occurring fibrous minerals that have crystallised to form fibres. Asbestos fibres do not dissolve in water or evaporate, they are resistant to heat, fire, chemical and biological degradation and are mechanically strong.
Asbestos is generally divided into two sub-groups; serpentine and amphiboles. Serpentine asbestos (chrysotile or white asbestos) was the most commonly used type of asbestos.

About Us
The Authority was established under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 1989, which has since been replaced by the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005.
Additional functions have been conferred on the Authority since then under the Chemicals Act 2008 and 2010, and other legislation. In 2014, the Irish National Accreditation Board (INAB) was included under the Authority’s functions.
